I watch the bubbles in the water cooler. They rise up in an unending stream, and then they pop.
Many people are walking out of the dour hall, taking advantage of the arbiter calling a recess to stretch their legs, and voice their opinions on the matter while they are at it.
In my moment of distraction, the water overflows, spilling onto the floor. The noblewoman behind me languidly moves away from the puddle, afraid the 'pure snowmelt from Sami' would damage her worn leather boots.
The boss decided that, from now on, we're the 'Sixteen Warriors'.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
But why?! I read in an old book that the first sixteen to follow Igor Velikiy got a title that meant 'councilmember', so 'Council' is the only choice!
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
Shut up about your stupid theories... Besides, if we're a 'Council', then we gotta respect a vote, right? Right now everyone thinks 'Warriors' sounds better.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
Blyat. I get less and less happy making this money.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
It's not just the name change. Now we suddenly need to keep track of our results, see who can handle the most kids...
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
Enough whining. Saw you slacking off yesterday, you want the boss to scream his head off at you?
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
Shut up. I sent one of them off last night.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
Who?
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
The one who said he was 'pure Grypherburger stock', Leonid Gelashvili or something.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
I checked some Grypherburg copies of the Almanac of Nobility, didn't see the family there. Then I decided to check some chronicles. Turns out, they're just an ordinary family from the south.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
The boss only wanted real nobles, so I handled him.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
*sigh* Why bother going to all that trouble? Could've just listened to his accent. Did he sound like a Grypherburger?
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
Accent? I've been shut in this damn place for too long, almost forgot what the locals are supposed to sound like.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
Hey, you, you a Grypherburger?
He gives his seat a pat, and he gets a yelp of fear in return. A student kneels on the ground underneath his buttocks, serving as his chair.
Panicked Student
I-I-I-I'm a Grypherburger!
Panicked Student
I've got the accent, I've got family! Please, let me go, gospodin!
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
If I remember right... You're not supposed to speak while you're being a chair. The boss is gonna get real mad at me if he sees this.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
So shut your mouth, alright? If you stay nice and quiet for an hour, I won't see you off today.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
Alright, enough. These kids don't have it easy, what with you terrorizing them all day.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
You, lecturing me?
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
You're the guy who's happy to sit on a stiff corpse.
Upon hearing her comrade's words, the thug pulls her knife out of her 'cushion', warm blood dripping off its blade.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
I like sitting cross-legged, doesn't matter to me if they're dead.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
...Hey, that little countess there? She's dragging some other girl along with her, think she's a noble tooβ
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug C
Save your strength, dearie. There's nowhere for you to run with all of us here.
Varvara
No, I beg youβ
Varvara
I gave Gromov all my money. He said I'm a noble, and that I'll leave here alive.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug C
You gave it to him, but not to me. Besides, I don't care about the money.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug C
I only care about order, understand? I'll say it clearly, no fighting in the dorm. Who said you could hit that Symposithingy boy?
Varvara
I didn't hit anyone! I just gave him a pushβ
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug C
Excuses! I told you kids a thousand times, fighting is wrong! When will you kids actually listen?
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug C
You need to be punished.
Varvara
...Punished... what?
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug C
Hey, Warriors! Beat the life outta this spoiled little princess. I'll think of what to say to Gromov.
Everyone
You got it!
Varvara closes her eyes tight. A gust of wind sweeps by her cheek, and a few drops of warm liquid splash across her forehead.
She shudders as she opens her eyes. The raised stick is gone, along with its master.
Zima
Who's next?!
Zima stands before Varvara, waving about a bloodstained steel pipe as she bellows out her challenge.
There are more footsteps and angry shouts, but they are soon replaced by cries of pain.
Leto
Hey! Don't even think about running!
Leto
Aren't you guys the Warriors now? How come even an Originium slug can take more punches than you?
'Pencil Stub'
I've got them!
Nika
We've cut off their escape route too, Sonya! They're not going to get away!
Before long, the nearby Warriors are sprawled out across the ground. Leto pats the dust off her hands, giving one of their heads a good kick before moving back to Sonya's side.
Leto
All taken care of, General.
Zima
Great! Time for a break.
Zima crouches down, stretching out a hand to Varvara.
Though Zima's face is still stained with blood, it is the face that has brought her the most relief these past few days.
Faddey
You're... Varvara? There are our people here?
Faddey
Chyort... Just how many Vanguards were captured...?
Zima
Not important. Focus on saving people.
Faddey
......
Zima
Can you still stand, Varvara?
Varvara
I...
Varvara
Sonya!
Varvara
*sob*... Sonya, Faddey, I thought I was going to die...
Faddey
Do I remember that you're the daughter of a soldier? Dry your tears.
Zima
It's fine, seriously.
Varvara
Mm... Right.
Zima
Listen, we're here to get everyone back.
Zima
Is it just you here? Where are the other students being held?
Varvara
They're... They're in the building on the north side.
Varvara
Gromov said the 'VIP Lounge' and 'Common Waiting Area' were there. There's still lots of students trapped in there, but I know the way, at least.
Zima
Lead the way.
Varvara tugs on Zima's hand, using her strength to stand. Though she still trembles, the light has returned to her eyes.
It is the light of a drowning girl who has grabbed onto a buoy. Though she does not know what exactly lies behind that door, she believes that as long as Sonya is with her, it is an exit out of this forsaken place.
Those thugs were pretty much all bark. Most of the people who were captured are still alive, but... they've been through a lot.
'Pencil Stub'
Speaking of the thugs, been a while since we saw them. Almost feels like something's off, haha.
Faddey
Shut up. You're the only one who likes those bastards.
Zima
This building's too close to the exit. It'll be easy to spot us. We can't wait for everyone to calm down before we act.
Zima
Pencil Stub, get everyone organized, then lead the way. Rosalind, hold the rear with me.
'Pencil Stub'
Got it, General.
Leto
Hah. You see? Nicknames are easier to work with, da?
The rescued students, several dozen in all, are huddled along the road like canned fins. Some of them had their jackets taken away, their faces streaked with tears.
But with Pencil Stub and his team's coaxing, they slowly stand up and follow their lead, heading towards their camp.
Rescued Student A
Finally. We're saved.
Rescued Student B
The sun is out. Let's go, quickly. I'd rather die than go back to that blasted place.
Rescued Student B
Wait. What's that sound?
Zima
Someone's coming. Hide in the buildings, and don't do anything stupid!
Before anyone can react, the Sixteen Warriors appear at the very back of the group, escorting a burly Ursus.
Shrieks break out at the sight of them, and everything immediately devolves into chaos. A few people shout, trying to maintain order, but to no avail.
Zima
Stay calm! I'll handle them!
Burly Ursus
Oh? You must be the Sonya they were talking about.
Burly Ursus
You're pretty small, aren't you? But you sure can fight.
Zima
You Gromov? What're you doing here?
Gromov
Haha. Your fellow students were too hasty, forgot a few important things.
Gromov
Seeing as some people came to the auction, but want to leave without buying a ticket... I've got no choice but to teach them a lesson. Personally.
Zima
There's one part you got wrong. I'm the only one you'll be facing.
Gromov
Just you?
Zima
What, scared?
Zima
That weapon you've got looks like a hammer and an axe had a baby. Fearsome.
Zima
Didn't think its master would be a spineless coward.
Gromov
...Pfft. Hahahahaβ
Gromov
You're the third one to get a laugh out of me today, little bear. The other two, I already dumped in the snow. They're wishing they had never been born.
Gromov
Come, take a good look at my weapon!
Zima
What theβ
It is an ebon maw, a voracious abyss.
Zima
......
Varvara
Are they pushing a... cannon?
Gromov
Readyβ
Zima
Get to cover!
The pitch-black muzzle slowly rises, the grinding of gears piercing the silence. Panic breaks out as people scramble to hide themselves where they can, holding their breath as they wait for the cannon's roar.
Nika
Run! To the buildings by the road!
Gromov
Fire!
For a moment, all sound is driven out of Katorga. All that remains is a keen ringing in the ears.
Zima pokes her head out of a snowbank, her sight blurred by blood. Though she leapt out of the center of the blast, shrapnel has left a gash across her forehead.
Under a layer of dust, a scorched, black pit mars what was once level ground. Flames climb their way up the wooden doors. Around her, there are the bleeding, the injured, the fallen.
Yeremey
Wh... Why?! Most of us are noble!
Gromov
Because you pissed me off, you snot-nosed little intellectual.
Gromov
There's only one real rule among the Sixteen Warriors: have your last words ready if you ever make me angry!
Gromov
Ready the second roundβ
Zima
Get everyone out of here, Rosalind! I'll draw their fire! That's an order!
Leto
Dammit!
Gromov's laughter can still be heard through the artillery barrage. He does not bother aiming, wantonly raining down fire across the area. Watching pathetic insects scurry about is his greatest joy, after all.
The ramshackle buildings sway. Varvara had been through too much today. She stands by a stone pillar, her eyes blank...
Faddey
Move!
Varvara
AHH!
Varvara
M-My legs, Iβ
Varvara
Oh, no no no no NO, I can't feel my legs!
Faddey
...Save it. You're still alive.
Nika
Faddey! You're bleeding! I need toβ
Faddey
...No. Don't you get it? Just run.
Faddey
Take that Varvara girl with you, and run. All of you. Don't bother about me...
Nika
......
Faddey
I said, RUN!
Nika
Take care, Faddey...
Nika
Grab onto my shoulders, Varvara. You're still alive, so just hang onβ
As the girls fade into the distance, Faddey lets out a deep breath. The last vestige of his consciousness is beginning to scatter.
Faddey
...So that's what it feels like... to get something done... to be a hero...
Ahh... Feels good to let out all that pent-up frustration that's been building up these past few days.
Gromov
Keep going, don't give them any time to breathe.
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug A
Alright, I'm onβARGH!
Gromov leaps aside as a crossbow bolt sprouts out of his lackey's chest. He looks towards its source: a high-rise, from which more bolts are coming.
Gromov
The Unbound? It's that Antosha again!
Gromov
C'mon, keep loading more shells! I'll bury him along with the students!
Security Team Captain
Gromov! Stop!
Security Team Captain
Your reckless actions have alarmed Gospodin Pavlovich, and he demands that you cease firing at once. If you dare hurt another noble, he'll have your hide!
Gromov
......
'Sixteen Warriors' Thug B
Hey, Boss... Do we retreat?
Gromov
Retreat? Forgotten how to fight without a cannon, have we?
Gromov
Go catch Antosha! If you don't deal with him, it'll be your hides on the line!
People covered in bandages throng around tonight's bonfires, repeating their experiences today to anyone within earshot, relishing in the joy of the survivor.
Leto still has energy to burn, so she and a few students with medical knowledge run around the camp, making themselves useful.
As for Nika, Yeremey and Pencil Stub, they sit together in silence, fidgeting with the firewood.
Varvara lies in a deep sleep after receiving treatment. She dreams of the parts of her body she has lost forever... as well as her peers, also gone for good.
The noble girl's alright now. Matvey has brought people to look after her and the other wounded.
Zima
Thank you. No amount of thanks could express what we feel. Matvey and the others are professionals when it comes to treating wounds. The Unbound has done so much for us.
Antosha
Heh. Those non-producing nobles will never understand that workers are far more capable than they are. Even if you start with no skills, as long as you want to survive, Ursus will always 'teach' you.
Antosha
That's why I can't understand why you'd waste medicine and energy on these people. They're not worth the effort.
Zima
I was the one who took them with me, and I promised them I'd bring everyone back. I saved a few people, but others... They believed in me, but they couldn't come back with us.
Antosha
Either way, you did all you could. The camp here is much more crowded. You brought back most of them. Mission accomplished.
Antosha
But I still have to warn you. Don't expect anything from those spoiled princelings and princesses. There might come a day when you regret saving their sorry hides.
Antosha
Don't try and deny it, Sonya. You and I both know how few nobles there are who recognize the need to fight for themselves. You should rely on people with more determination.
Zima
......
Zima
You're wrong, Antosha.
Zima
Look at the faces around the bonfire. Doesn't matter if they're noble or common, there's always someone with their fists clenched tight.
Zima
As long as they haven't given up on resisting, as long as the fire still burns inside them... I won't turn my back on anyone.
Zima
I need them. They can become fighters.
Antosha
You're delusional.
Antosha
There's only ever a small subsection of the people who are actually decisive. You should pick a team of smart, hard-working, ordinary students, and come with me.
Antosha
Once we get rid of the two in charge, we'll be out of here quick.
Zima
Thanks, Antosha, but I've already made my decision.
Zima
When the crisis hits, no one can stay out of it. I will turn them into a real unit. No one gets left behind.
Zima
Doesn't matter if it's Gromov, Pavlovich, or those assholes pushing the cannon while they look down on usβ
Zima
We'll knock them all to the ground!
Antosha
Today's operation might've given you prestige, but it's also given you blind faith.
Antosha
I don't understand how those soft-handed weaklings who can't even hold a weapon tight are meant to take down those madmen, and that cannon.
Zima
As long as they can walk and make a fist, they can do it. I'll start by teaching them how to march.
Zima
Past experience tells me that, with the right tactics, even a weakling can be worth ten men.
Zima
As for the cannon, all we can do is wait for the right opportunity. We can't take it head-on, for now at least.
Zima
Maybe... My friends can bring us some opportunities.
Antosha
Your friends? The ones outside Katorga?
Zima
Yeah.
Antosha
How can you be so sure they're working on helping you?
Zima
I've got absolutely zero doubt they are.
Zima
You can't imagine the things we've been through together.
